Had to read this for class. Despite it being required, I actually enjoyed it. Slightly depressing, but it gives you a real glimpse of what some people go through to get a better life.Tags : Amazon.com: Children of the River (Laurel-Leaf Contemporary Fiction) (9780440210221): Linda Crew: Books,Linda Crew,Children of the River (Laurel-Leaf Contemporary Fiction),Laurel Leaf,0440210224,Social Themes - Emigration & Immigration,Asian Americans,Khmers,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fiction-ActionAdventure,General fiction (Children's Teenage),Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Grades 10-12 Ages 15+,MASS MARKET,Social Themes - Adolescence,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Coming of Age,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Family Multigenerational,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Emigration & Immigration, family;immigration;books for 12 year old girls;teen fiction books;books for 13 year old girls;tween books for girls ages 11-14;grandparents;teen books for boys;books for 12 year old boys;teen books;young adult books;books for teens;teen girl books;ya books;young adult;books for teen girls;teen boy books;teen books for girls;diversity;books for teen boys;books for 14 year old girls;books for 14 year old boys;books for 13 year old boys;coming of age;realistic fiction books for kids 12-15,young adult; family; teen books; young adult books; books for teens; ya books; books for teen girls; tween books for girls ages 11-14; teen girl books; teen books for girls; books for teen boys; books for 12 year old girls; teen boy books; books for 12 year old boys; books for 13 year old boys; grandparents; books for 13 year old girls; teen books for boys; teen fiction books; books for 14 year old boys; books for 14 year old girls; immigration; diversity; realistic fiction books for kids 12-15; school; adoption,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Emigration & Immigration,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),General fiction (Children's Teenage)
Children of the River LaurelLeaf Contemporary Fiction Linda Crew Books Reviews
This story describes a young girl's coming to America and her discovery of how her past shapes her future. Inspirational.

I read this book with my nephew for an honors English summer assignment. I learned alot about Cambodia and Viet Nam even though I'm old enough that I was a young adult when all that actually happened. I guess I didn't pay enough attention when all that was going on. I'm really glad I helped with this summer assignment. The story is told through the eyes of a Cambodian teeenage girl fleeing her homeland and coming to live in America. Though I enjoyed it my nephew struggled with it. If the main character had been a boy the nephew would have liked the book more.
good service on time mailing plays good work well well well well well well well well well well well well
Required reading for 9th grade
I enjoyed reading this book. I read it for a class and really enjoyed the issues raised. It gave me a perspective about culture and maintaining customs in a new land without fully being able to. It also demonstrated the bravery of a young girl leaving her own family to help an aunt and living with the guilt that she's a failure to her family and ancestors. What she comes to learn is that love should never wait to be shown . I really enjoyed this book.
I read this reluctantly so I could discuss it with my daughter before she wrote her report on it. I was deeply moved and would recommend it readers of any age. Linda Crew pulls off the most envied feat of a fiction writer, convincing you the story must be a first-hand experience, such is its verisimilitude.
