I am easily intimidated by men in uniforms, especially these two big, green-suited giants who pulled back the door on my train compartment and held out their hands, waiting for me to dig my passport out of my backpack. They were not smiling. To add to the drama, it was the middle of the night, so my groggy self couldn’t find the bloody blue book that would tell them I was who I am. I’m always like this at border crossings. I get so nervous I convince myself that I am truly guilty of some crime that even I didn’t know I had committed. This nervousness is particularly pronounced when I, a child of the land of liberty and freedom for all, cross behind the dreaded Iron Curtain. Now, heading into Tito’s Yugoslavia, I had the same dry-mouth, flip-of-the-stomach fear that I had felt at Checkpoint Charlie two years before, when I was searched for contraband pfennigs on the way back from the ballet in East Berlin.
So begins the stories of a naïve, language-challenged twenty-something young woman, as she travelled through Yugoslavia (former), France, Spain, Morocco and Greece in the early 1970s. These stories aren’t the usual backpacking, dope-smoking adventures that so many young people were having at the time but rather day-to-day encounters with cranky landladies, fish mongers, thorny cherry trees, on-the-floor bread making, serenading potato sellers, marauding centaurs and so much more.
The stories in Mediterranean Journey are loosely based on the real adventures of the author who immersed herself in the language, culture and food of each country as she searched for home.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and would highly recommend it. Such a great read... great storytelling. I felt like I was vicariously living through the author's travels, struggling through many awkward and uncomfortable situations, being delighted with her surprise successes, meeting interesting people, and even discovering new food! And all this is delivered with a very ornery sense of humor, such that my wife frequently rolled her eyes as she saw me reading with a big grin on my face.Product details

Mediterranean Journey eBook Ann Eyerman Reviews
I couldn't put the book down for long! I really enjoyed Ann's fascinating adventures in the Mediterranean 70's. She went through rough challenging times with different cultures, language and food; and sometimes her living conditions that I don't think I would have had her fortitude to face. But the pleasure that she derived from it in the midst of how the "real" people live enthralled me. It speaks such good things of her character. I really want the cookbook too. I highly recommend this author's knack for storytelling. Purchase the book. You won't regret it.
A very enjoyable account of a young girl's journey. Highly reccommend!
I think this book captures the spirit and energy of Europe in the 1970s. The stories are funny, clear, well-written and engaging. A great book to take on a trip.
Lovely nostalgic read for anyone who loves to travel! I really enjoyed following this very personal story of a character and seeing how this very shy young girl overcomes various cultural differences and becomes a confident nomad. Having visited many of the places in the book myself, it is interesting to see how they have changed in 40 years! Really looking forward to the cook book!
Great storytelling! Brings back many memories of youthful travels to Europe in the 70s. Ms. Eyerman has a knack for describing landladies and cultural dilemmas the book is fun, funny and ideal for reading while traveling. It should be placed in every young girl's backpack as she heads out for her first trip to Europe!
I loved this book! Ann's adventures in Europe were beautiful and touching to read, with such fascinating and well-rounded characters that she met in so many different places! I especially loved reading about the different foods she ate, and hope that Ann eventually publishes her promised Mediterranean cookbook! I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in personal history or memoirs, or in travelogues about 1970's Europe.
I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. It is a snapshot of 1970s Mediterranean area Europe, including the Communist era side of Europe, from the American writer's perspective. Interesting descriptions of food, landscape, the culture and the people the writer met along her journey. This is not a tourist writing - the writer actually lived, in apartments, in the various countries, so you get an actual feel for how it was like to live in those countries at that time. The chapters are different enough (different countries) that there are mini-books contained within the one book - but still a quick read.
