Despite being the only daughter of a very wealthy man, Priscilla Jane Hamilton Greer has been kidnapped for reasons other than money. Jane (as she likes to be called) knows where the microfilm is that has quite a bit of highly classified secrets on it. Currently she is being held in a villa deep in the rain forest.Grant Sullivan is now retired and living on a farm in Tennessee. Jane's father hires him to come out of retirement, and rescue his daughter. Why? At one point in time, Sullivan was a highly developed killer called the "Tiger", who specialized in cases involving jungles and rain forests.
Naturally when the two get together, sparks fly. Jane is absolutely NOTHING like Grant thought she would be, and she keeps him completely off balance almost to the very end of the book. The romance between the two is intense, funny, captivating and engrossing.
Back in the 80's, Silhouette romances discovered a line of ladies who wrote romances that really rocked. Linda Howard was one of those authors, and Midnight Rainbow was one of those stories. I read this book when it first was published, and definitely would have given it 5 stars then, but today I am not as willing to overlook a few plot holes as I was in my younger years. As one example, Jane head butts the enemy, steals his gun and runs to save Grant. Of course, as soon as the enemy gets it together, he amasses his force of troops and they take off after the two of them. Now I have to say if it was me and I had a gun, I would have shot this dude. The end. No more bad guys, and armies of troops have a tendency not to do anything for dead people because they don't get paid. Naturally, the story wouldn't have carried on further and things may have been resolved too soon, but I still don't like obvious plot holes.
That said, Midnight Rainbow is one of my favorite Howard books. There actually was a follow up book about Grant's boss, Kell Sabin, in a book which followed later called Diamond Bay. I would recommend purchasing and reading both. In my opinion, the books that Howard wrote for Silhouette were her best efforts. After she left that romance line and went to romantic suspense, I thought her stories became decidedly lukewarm.

Midnight Rainbow Linda Howard 9781551661537 Books Reviews
This is one of my favorite Linda Howard books, but beware that the epilogue is missing. That really doesn't set well with me. Makes me wonder how many books I've bought that I haven't already read in paperback that I've been cheated out of the ending. Was getting ready to buy Diamond Bay to have on my tablet, but not now that I know this. Back to paperback for me.
Spoiler Alert! This book was first written and published in 1986. It has some dated material that does not detract from the story line. That said, this book immediately made it into my Favorites folder as soon as I finished. This is a great story that I will revisit time and again. Look for other re-releases of this author and do not be deterred by the nay-sayers who insist that every character have a GPS tracking device, a hybrid car and a smartphone. This is NOT an episode of MacGyver.
Storyline Grant Sullivan is hired to retrieve Jane Greer, who may have been kidnapped, although no ransom demand has been made. He rescues her from Turego (the bad guy) and they escape through the Costa Rican jungle where they become lovers. Grant is a great warrior. He is rough and tough, always testing Jane, but he does keep them alive. Jane is a great survivor. She is strong and is up to the challenges that Grant continually throws at her. She has a good sense of humor and a terrific bag of stuff that Grant refers to as her "travelling supermarket."
"She was a constant paradox, a unpredictable blend of innocence and contrariness, of surprising prudery and amazing boldness. In no way was she what he'd expected."
FINAL DECISION An action packed jungle romance, MIDNIGHT RAINBOW has two main characters who have lived a life alone until their adventure tosses them with the one person who gives them what they need. One of my all time favorite books because of the connection between these characters.
THE STORY Grant Sullivan, a burnt out ex-agent, agrees to rescue a society girl from the men holding her hostage in South America. The question is whether Jane Hamilton Greer is just a harmless society girl or whether she is involved in the espionage which threatens the interests of the United States. Jane is a women who struggles with a painful incident that occurred when she was a child but has managed to be strong and independent despite all odds. Meeting Grant exposes her to feelings and emotions that she never expected.
OPINION This book remains one of my all time favorites. One of the jungle romance books, this book is elevated by the characters who have suffered pain in their pasts and yet have humor and sexy chemistry. The story is exciting and filled with adventure.
Grant Sullivan is a dreamy hero. Tortured and dealing with too many years of having to do bad things for good reasons, Grant is surviving but not living. When he meets Jane, she opens him up to happiness. One of my favorite scenes is when Jane's antics make Grant laugh. He is shocked and surprised because he cannot remember when he last laughed. Jane manages to bring lightness and joy back into Grant's life. Grant brings safety and security into Jane's life. After years of being emotionally alone, Jane finds she is able to depend upon Grant in a way she has never been able to before.
The beauty of these two people who have functioned alone finding a soul mate always makes me sigh and smile. One of my favorite parts of this book is how smart and independent Jane is. I have no doubt she would have been able to save herself and that makes her the perfect partner for Grant.
The action in this book keeps the pages turning. This is one of my guaranteed reads and it never gets old.
WORTH MENTIONING This book was originally published in the 1980s as a category romance.
CONNECTED BOOKS MIDNIGHT RAINBOW is the first book in what is known as the Rescues or Kell Sabin series.
STAR RATING I give this book 5 stars.
I like Linda Howard but would not have bought this book had I remembered it from years ago. The publication date is noted to be 10/15 without any indication the it was an old book. I find this practice by any publisher deceiving as well as a rip off
