Ellen Walker does an amazing job conveying the highs and lows of raising an autistic child. One can feel her and her husband's emotions as they work to do the best for their son, John. Because society and "helpers" often set up more roadblocks than assistance to such families, Ellen gives lots of good advice for other families facing this struggle. Though there is lots of good advice in the story, it is not dry. You will want to sit right down and read it to the end. Despite the difficulties of raising such a child, the parents show much love and patience for their child and each other. They also portray their son as someone worth knowing!Product details

This memoir made me chuckle and made me wipe away tears. As a mom who also had a child who learned differently, there is really nothing like our heartbreak. The Walkers tell their story with honestly, pride, sadness, and unconditional love. If you feel alone in your struggles with your children because they don't quite fit the norm, you are not alone. Read Ellen Walker's book and feel first hand how one mom and dad took each day, one at a time, to help their son achieve the normal steps of growing up despite some overwhelming diagnoses.
Ellen Walker gives the reader a bird's eye view about living with a child on the autism spectrum in Bringing Up John. At times the book makes you smile, and at other times it brings tears to your eyes. As Ellen indicates the journey continues due to the fact autism is a life long condition. She describes the struggles with the school system to make sure John was getting his needs met in a school setting. Ellen describes making sure services were in place and ready for John as an adult. This is not an easy task, and you are constantly advocating for your child. Ellen also says trust your instincts when something seems awry. As a mother you know your child and their needs. Bringing Up John is a book you should read, if you have a child on the autism spectrum.
Bringing Up John is an extremely well written and heart felt book which brings tears one moment and laughter the next. Ellen and Al's struggles and joys raising John, who is living with autism, give hope and comfort to those who are close to it. Those who are not are led into a world where they can learn more about a disorder that doesn't get enough attention. Ellen does an excellent job telling a story that is both enjoyable and informative at the same time. It was hard to put it down and I read it in one day. I highly recommend it.
Hooray for Mothers!
Before much was published about autism, before the staggering statistics, and before there were the Wright's from NBC, Jenny McCarthy, and Doug Flutie putting celebrity faces to the diagnosis, there were moms like Ellen Walker who raised children on the autism spectrum by pure gut instinct and tenacity.
Ellen's story will resonate with all parents out there who have adult children on the spectrum and who struggled to find appropriate services when few were available and little was known about what would become a household word Autism.
There are some very funny vignettes in this book that will have you laughing out loud, and others that will bring you to tears. Through it all, the Walkers persevered and this book ends with you wanting to know more about John.
The book is written primarily from a mother's voice, but in stark contrast are the thoughts of a father who has ordinary hopes, dreams and fears for his son.
"Bringing Up John" is an easy, hopeful "read" for parents both new to diagnosis or seasoned from living with and loving someone on the autism spectrum...I look forward to the sequel!
