Ive had this book on my shelf for a while and have not read anything from this author. It was requested from me on my paperbackswap account so I thought id give it a quick read. I had mixed feelings after reading the reviews so I thought I would give a bit of clarification to the other review readers after reading it.
I wont rehash plot since that has been done.
I was disturbed by one of the reviews suggesting the H raped the h. That particular scene was relayed through a flashback and did not leave me with that particular distasteful reaction. The H committed a transgression while they were engaged that the h found out about. She married him anyway and he did not know that she knew about his transgression. During their marriage bed she lay cold and lifeless while he tries to make love to her. He loved her so much (his words) that he didn't understand why, so -withought rehashing the whole scene basically cuddled with her in the night. She turned to him in her sleep. She did tell him not to do it again but also admitted that it was because she didn't want to be overcome by the passion she still felt for him.
There were also reviews that she was so cold and unfeeling and not a good charachter. That's semi true throughout some of the book; but then you come to find that many people she has loved in her life have died. She was also ignored most of her life by her father and then felt betrayed by the man she loved, so closed herself off.
I will say that this author writes very well. She brings a fresh writing style to so many cookie cutter hist. Romance novels I've read lately. What I didn't particularly like (just my particular reading style) was that there was alot of descriptiveness about the indian country they traveled in; maybe that just because I was trying to forget they were in india since I prefer england historical romances lol. The hero is also 4 years younger than the heroine...which wouldn't have been such an issue but at the time most of the book takes place he is 28 and she is 32...two different decades and it was annoying to me. I don't know why this bothered me either but I didn't like that the h had a "2inch. Wide strip of white hair that started at her forehead".
Other than that I really thought this was a well written book and was a quick read. Hope this helps other potential readers of this book. :)

Not Quite a Husband The Marsdens Sherry Thomas 9780553592436 Books Reviews

I will not describe the plot, because several reviewers have already done it, but I would comment that the book is emotionally precious, dreamy, romantic, sensually, delicious and deeply satisfying. So good !

Both protagonists have made mistakes during their past together, none of them is perfect and that's what makes so special this story, because it allows us to follow the discovery journey between these two. Understanding that forgiveness and second chances are not easy given when there is so much pain and mistrust between, but with true love this writer allows us to believe that anything is possible.

And that's what I am looking in a romantic book the knowing satisfaction that the deep and undying love can conquer everything.

I have recently discovered Sherry Thomas and I must say it has become part from my favorite historical romantic authors, because not only explores romantic relationships outside from the clichés that plague the romance genre, but deepens and builds in the relationship between the protagonists so beautifully that everything fell into place—like pieces from a well armed puzzle. Her writing is magnificent and so is the historical research. Kudos to Mrs. Thomas!

Enjoy!
4.5 stars. I just reread this book and it might even have been better the second go around. Unlike Thomas' other two novels that I also thoroughly enjoyed (His at Night and Private Arrangements), this book does not have secondary characters with an intertwining story line and the book focuses solely on the literal and figurative journey that Leo and Bryony take across India and learn about each other to find what really matters.

Again, have to comment on Thomas' unique characters, which does not mold into your typical historical romance novel and her talent for giving them depth. Before I got started on this, I was a bit put off by the hero being younger than the heroine, just doesn't fit with my preference of the older/more experienced romance novel hero. I was glad I continued reading. Both characters are brilliant (Leo is hailed as a mathematical prodigy and she a medical pioneer, especially given the time period). I liked how Thomas made them both flawed despite their brilliance, it made the characters and the story a lot more interesting. Leo's character is more in line with your typical hero, handsome, confident, charming with the world at his feet, but his flaw in the story ended up being the factor that created misery and heartbreak for the both of them. For Bryony's part, on the outside she is cool and aloof with seemingly more interest in the medical science than the emotional aspect of medicine and caring for patients, but there is so much more to her than that.

The catalyst that frees them both is not something superficial but a realistic jarring of their emotional baggage. I love how the story and the history of these two characters unfolded in the book, going back and forth in present and in time, slowly unravelling the story behind the characters, their motivation, their relationship growing up, their courtship, their marriage and the reason for its dissolution. All the while the author is giving you a history lesson on the political climate of India and creating a beautiful backdrop for the story.

I cannot wait for the author's new books!
